Remembrance

Today is December 7, for those of you who are just crawling out of bed and have not looked at the calendar yet.

Today is the 66th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

My mother still talks to me about what that Sunday morning was like in Seattle, when word reached them over their radio of the attack. She says she had never seen a city turned so still and quiet so fast. That is until September 11.

One of her most vivid memories of that day and the years following are the black outs. At night time you could not have one single light showing through your windows. They had community people who would walk the streets looking for light leaking through the windows. As a child I really had no clue what that was all about. Why they had to keep all the light inside.

Right now, in Pearl Harbor,Hawaii the remains of 1, 177 USS Arizona seamen rest. Where their ship sunk to the bottom of the harbor. Many of them remained alive for days, even weeks after the ship sunk.
So as we continue on our day, readying ourselves for Christmas, this weekend, the next work week, please take a few minutes at 8:30 am Pacific Time to say a quick prayer, remembrance, thought for all of our men and women who are serving in the military and protecting our rights. While we argue over whether it is a Christmas Tree or a Holiday Season, remember who has given us the right to be able to argue over these details....men and women who have died protecting our rights and the rights of others.

I still don't understand what that blackout thing was. Did they really think that our enemies needed light to know where to bomb us?

I think that 9/11 only seems worse because of the amount of media coverage we have now as compared to then. Not saying that 9/11 was less of a tragedy, they were each profoundly tragic in their own ways, one was just more "visible" than the other.

shelli-the planes or submarines could see lights from houses and drop bombs. My mother was raised in Seattle, Washington, which is on the water and they were sure that the Japanese were right off the coast.

diva-thank you

kayli-okay, now you are scaring me...really, not taught in schools anymore?!? Wait til the Washington State American Legion hears this!

sheila-thank you also!

stacie-thank you for taking time to read it!

To All-What I did not include was that my mother's older brother went down on Sunday, December 7 at 11:30 am (Pacific Time) and joined the Navy. My mom was 9 years old.

Very nice...it never hurts to remind.

Well said - thank you to our servicemen/women now, and past, for our freedom.
