In the Valley of Elah

If you haven't seen this movie, you need to see it NOW.

Netflix, Blockbuster, whatever. Rent it and watch it. Pay attention, especially the last scene. I cried for 1/2 an hour when the movie was over.

This movie stars Tommy Lee Jones and Susan Sarandon. Tommy Lee Jones was nominated for an Oscar for this role. He didn't win. Not surprising considering the current political policy regarding this theme.

A soldier returns home after 18 months in Iraq. He doesn't call his family or even let them know that he is coming home. His father is notified that his son is home when the son is about to be declared AWOL. (AWOL=Absent WithOut Leave)

WTF are we doing to our children???? Watch this movie and get back to me.

It's Nam all over again, only this time we recognize that we are screwing up.

I haven't seen this one yet, but I did see Stop Loss, which is told from a soldier who goes AWOL when he is "Stop Lossed", which is being forced to serve another tour even when your duty is up. It was pretty good, too. Along the same lines.
