Earth Hour

When I got up this morning I logged onto my computer through Google. Imagine my surprise to see the screen black. In my caffeine depraved state, I determined that I was indeed on the correct page, something had just changed. (it did take me a few minutes)

Google is recognizing Earth Hour. What is Earth Hour you ask (as I did, which is why I included the link). It is one hour on March 29, 2008 when you turn off all the power in your life. From 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm, in whatever time zone you live in, you turn off the power.

While Earth Day is set up to promote energy conservation, just think about what else can be accomplished.

Imagine it.

One hour spent with your loved ones without distractions.

One hour without the TV, radio, Ipod, telephone, (cell phones included) electronic games, (god forbid) computer.

One hour actually talking to each other, without fingers dashing across a keyboard on a computer or telephone.

One hour playing a game where you can actually see the person sitting across from you.

One hour finding out what is really going on in your children's lives.

One hour finding out what your spouse/significant other really thinks about the new carpet in the bedroom.

When was the last time any of us sat around, with the candles lit, just looking at each other? Will you be able to find anything at all to say?

Well, you know what Not a Grampy and I will be doing tonight, 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm Eastern, Daylight Savings Time.

Yup, I think we will get some of that in also!!

Earth Hour sounds like fun. I remember when we lost our power for 8 days during the hurricane, every night we would sit on the back lanai and play a game, talk, listen to the radio, and just laugh. We promised that we would do that regularly. The power came back on, my love affair with the airconditioner reaffirmed and those sitting playing and laughing didn't come around again.

So tonight, I will prepare a little Earth hour and SOME of that too...

jersey girl-Thanks for stopping by. That is the same thing we did during the storms of 2004. Sitting watching the wind blow the branches down...I know what you mean about the A/C.

Wow! I celbrated and didn't even realize it. I turned off my laptop last nightand for the first time in years, no swim meets, basketballs games, or anything, kept me from sleeping until 9:30.

Probably not exactly the intent, but I can tell you we were using much less power in that particular hour.

Now my eldest as the pestilence I had all last week, so his butt is firmly planted in front of the flat screen and I predict it will be on all day long. Miserable, sick pre-teen meets global warming. Yep, keeping the kid pacified trumps every time.

Nice post! :)

I never had heard about this, but I definitely think more people should. I feel like I do nothing but stare at my computer or tv.

I'll turn the lights off when we go to bed.

And you missed out on a good time last night!

scout-ill pre-teen definitely excuses you from participation!

trish-hubby and I sat out back last night, in the dark, and just chatted. It was great.

avi-I really wanted to try and go, had to raise money for the agency I work for. These budget cuts are going to kill us!

We decided to make it longer than an hour. We talked about things that made us laugh. We sat under candle light and made hand puppets, and then... We ripped off all our clothes and went swimming. I have to admit I look damn sexy in the dark.

It was really nice and it lasted for about 4 hours. We have planned to do it again next Friday night. Just unwind and relax and talk about the week.
