I was picking up some donations from a lady and her husband last night after work. I do this very frequently, going to peoples homes to pick up items they want to donate. Most time I have to put the back seats down in my car to load everything in.
I drive a 2005 Toyota Prius. I love my car. I drive 72 miles roundtrip each day to work. I am getting 54 mpg. Yup, 54 freakin miles to the gallon!!
If you aren't familiar with the Prius it is a hybrid. Electric and gas engine and no you do not plug it in. The car regenerates through the use of the brakes and other methods. Don't ask me all the details, I don't care all that much, I just know I am getting 54 miles to the gallon.
Anyway, after I picked up the 6 bags from this lovely lady, I thanked them, they went into their house and I got into my car.
I pushed the Power button, with my foot on the brake as required, and nothing happened. Huh? I tried again, nothing, just a whirring noise. I checked that I was in Park, yup, pushed the Power button again...still notta. So I opened the door and closed it again. Hey, you never know, it could be a door thing. One more time...Nope!
So, here I am in a gated neighborhood, with a dead car (I just know that my hybrid battery had gone kaput). My car only has 57,000 miles on it, that damn battery is supposed to last to at least 140,000. I am getting ready to call Not A Grampy and then AAA when I glance in the seat next to me and what do I see...
My keys.
I insert the cartridge in the slot, press the Power button and back out of the strangers driveway.
PS, Don't tell Not a Grampy, he would laugh at me.

54 MPG?
*faint*
Makes my car like a fuel guzzling dinosaur!!!!
I'm constantly forgetting to put it in park or other little things that keep it from firing back up.
I swear I'll not tell.
HAH! I learnt the hard was (read: in front of the super hawt jocks at my school) that my car will not turn on if the car is in reverse.
Of course I had to learn it by having the guys explain it to me. And then I ended up dating one of them, but he ended up being a real jerk so..
anyway. Im gonna make cookies tonight :o)
So do you fill up like once a year, or what?
Mr. Fab-*splashing wine on his face*...hmmm..guess I will leave him here.
diva-thanks for keeping my secret
blue-all I can do is imagine the tow truck guy from AAA laughing at me when he found the keys.
miss britt-I wish, once a week. It only has a 10 gallon tank.
HOLY HELL - that's awesome! I need to look that up online, 'cause I'm pretty sure asking you how it would do in snow would only make you laugh... ;-)
I left the grocery store one day (years ago, I swear) & got into the passenger seat. Sat there. Looked around, scooted OVER THE SHIFTER into the driver's seat & drove myself away. heh
LOL - see NO ONE would have ever known!!! I mean - you have to tell US of course - but all too funny!!
oh my heavens...I won't laugh at you, I promise, because it's just that sort of thing that I would do...but it is somewhat amusing! :)
Stacie
I love this story! A few years ago I left the keys in the ignition with the lights on TWICE within a week one time! I was still in high school and my dad was NOT very happy with me haha. I have also been known to try to get out of the car with my seat belt on...it doesn't work.
The weather out here at home isn't too bad. When I left Kansas it was anywhere from 6 degrees to 27 or something, I'll take the 40's!!
Now that's pretty funny. I've tried to start my car out of park and it doesn't....hmmm....
And 54 mpg - HOLY CRAP
That's a great story. Sounds like something I would do!
I'd love a Prius, but they are just so damn small. But 54 mpg just might make it worth the lack of space.....
